This interview was held with Michael Dube, Executive Vice President of Manufacturing Operations and Engineering of Rochester Electronics.

Tell me a bit about your background? How did you first get started with Rochester Electronics?

 

Sure, let me share a bit about my journey. I kicked off my time in the semiconductor world back in 1984 with Fairchild Semiconductor, where I began as an engineer. I’ve worn different hats throughout the years, diving into various engineering and operations roles both at Fairchild and NXP. I even had the opportunity to live in Asia while handling some of my executive responsibilities. Eventually, my journey led me to where I am now, with Rochester Electronics, where we’re engaging in onshoring magic, handling package assembly, and testing stateside.  

Tell me about Rochester Electronics?

In 1981, Mr. Curt Gerrish founded Rochester Electronics. Curt recognized the demands of customers with long lifecycle applications, offering them a reliable source of supplier-authorized components post-end-of-life (EOL). To tackle EOL semiconductor issues, Rochester began by distributing obsolete semiconductors. Moving beyond in-stock inventory, the Rochester’s vision expanded to include licensed manufacturing.

How has the role/offering of Rochester changed during the recent years?

Rochester’s partnerships continue to expand, with over 70 semiconductor manufacturers now onboard. Our customers turn to Rochester for onshore turnkey semiconductor manufacturing solutions as an extra layer of protection against supply chain disruptions.

Which market segment seems promising to you? And why?

 

We’re anticipating ongoing growth opportunities in market segments demanding long-term support, including the military, industrial, medical, and automotive sectors. Also, there is potential for collaboration with USA-based companies seeking supply chain protection for semiconductor applications.

What is a typical customer for Rochester Electronics?

 

Rochester Electronics has a diverse group of globally customers, ranging from military and aerospace to medical, industrial, and automotive sectors. These customers often turn to us when they’re dealing with tricky situations, like EOL or obsolete components. We’ve got their backs by providing a wide range of authorized and traceable semiconductor solutions. Essentially, we act as a reliable partner, helping our customers avoid the headache of costly redesigns and ensuring long-term support for their electronic systems.

What are the 3 top things you wish your customers would do better (or different)?

 

Typically, our customers grapple with EOL challenges, aiming to prolong their product lives and avoid costly redesigns. Ideally, we encourage customers to share their build-of-materials, so that Rochester can proactively source the current semiconductor solution or offer suitable alternatives.

We have several solutions at our disposal:

We can supply directly from our distribution warehouse.
Initiate a product build using the original component manufacturer.
Leverage our design team to replicate the product solution.

 

Are you currently hiring? What type of jobs?

 

Thanks to our onshoring efforts, we’re growing our operations and bringing in new staff for key engineering and operator roles. Plus, we’ve teamed up with local high schools and a bunch of engineering colleges through feeder programs.

What is the best moment in your day?

The highlight of my day is waking up early, spending time with my dog, and hitting the gym for a workout before diving into my business day.

How do you keep yourself energized and engaged during the day?

I love reenergizing at work by connecting with people from the various organizations within Rochester. Our company has a fantastic family culture and getting to know everyone adds a great vibe to the day.

How do you spend your time outside working hours?

I cherish time with my wife outside of work. We share a love for exploring different cuisines, traveling to various countries and states for vacations; it’s our way of creating wonderful memories together.
