Samsung Electronics has incorporated its next-generation mobile application processor (AP), the Exynos 2400, into the latest premium smartphone, the Galaxy S24 series.

On Jan. 17, Samsung Electronics hosted Galaxy Unpacked 2024 at the SAP Center in San Jose, California, in the U.S., where they unveiled the Galaxy S24 series, their first smartphone equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The Exynos 2400, an AP developed by Samsung, is installed in the S24+ and S24 models. An AP serves as the “brain” of a smartphone. The highest specification model, the S24 Ultra, is equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

The Exynos 2400, unveiled at the Samsung System LSI Tech Day in October last year, is a next-generation AP that includes AMD’s latest RDNA3 architecture-based Xclipse 940 graphics processing unit (GPU).

Samsung Electronics aims to revive its System LSI business with this chip. According to market research firm Counterpoint Research, Samsung’s AP market share by shipments dropped from 8% in the fourth quarter of 2022 to 5% in the third quarter of last year, a decrease of 3 percentage points. Samsung’s System LSI Business Division, responsible for the AP business, is known to have incurred losses last year. The payout rate for the Target Achievement Incentive (TAI) in the second half of last year for the System LSI Business Division was 0%.

The Exynos 2400, making a comeback after two years, has improved its central processing unit (CPU) performance by 1.7 times and AI performance by 14.7 times compared to its predecessor, the Exynos 2200.

Additionally, it features a deca-core CPU in a “Tri-cluster” structure and a hexa-core GPU, both utilizing the 4-nanometer 3rd generation low-power process node. For the first time in Samsung’s mobile APs, the Fan-Out Wafer-Level Package (FOWLP) method was applied to enhance thermal resistance and optimize power efficiency in mobile devices.

Samsung Electronics anticipates that the Exynos 2400 will not only provide users with an ultra-realistic gaming experience but also elevate the mobile experience through various on-device generative AI features.

The Exynos 2400 supports various on-device generative AI functions such as sentence correction and style transformation. It is particularly notable for performing generative AI functions without an internet connection, enhancing user privacy and convenience. Through a partnership with Google, it collaborates with the new service system of Android 14, known as Android AI Core (AICore), and supports a variety of on-device AI services through the next-generation large language model Gemini Nano’

Improved AI performance has enhanced photo and video quality in low-light conditions. The content-aware image processing feature, previously applied only to photos, has now been extended to videos. It optimally processes both the subject and background separately, allowing users to create and enjoy more refined works.
