The Cell Broadcast Service or Public Warning System is a component of the 5G cell broadcast mechanism. The Cell Broadcast Centre Function (CBCF) is a generic broadcast center that handles all types of broadcast messages, including paid advertisements. The Public Warning System (PWS) specifically deals with public warning-related broadcast messages such as those for earthquakes or tsunamis.
Both the CBCF and PWS can write, replace, or cancel broadcast messages to the AMF via the Namf SAP(N50) interface. When writing a broadcast message to the AMF, the CBCF/PWS must provide the content of the message, the message ID, the number of broadcasts, and the broadcast intervals. At any time, the CBCF/PWS can cancel a broadcast by specifying the message ID that is currently being actively broadcasted.
The article also includes diagrams illustrating the cell broadcast and public warning system topology, the warning message delivery procedure in NG-RAN, the process of writing/replacing warning messages by AMF to NG-RAN, the PWS cancel procedure, PWS restart indication, and PWS failure indication.
