From chatbots to autonomous coworkers

Over the past two years, AI assistants have evolved from helpful sidekicks into something closer to digital coworkers. Agentic AI systems can now interpret goals, plan workflows, call dozens of tools, orchestrate APIs and move data across multiple clouds without a human guiding every step. Analysts describe this as a shift from reactive chatbots to autonomous, goal-seeking agents that can execute complex, multi-step tasks.

his evolution collides directly with the way enterprises build their infrastructure. The more autonomous your AI assistants become, the more they span SaaS platforms, hyperscaler regions, sovereign clouds and edge locations. That mess of endpoints and services is precisely why multicloud networking has stopped being a niche architecture and become the default for AI-heavy organizations. Recent market research estimates the multi-cloud networking market at around 5.2 billion US dollars in 2025, with projections to reach more than 17 billion US dollars by 2035 as enterprises chase agility and resilience across clouds.

At the same time, worker expectations are changing. A recent survey of over a thousand enterprise employees found that more than eighty percent are eager to work with agentic AI, even as over half worry about job security and oversight. The common denominator is trust: autonomous assistants are only useful if the networks they run on are fast, observable and secure enough to support decision-making at scale.


Why AI assistants are forcing a multicloud-by-design strategy

Five years ago, “multicloud” often meant a couple of experimental workloads running in a second provider. Today, it describes the mainstream reality. One networking outlook for 2025 notes that single-cloud architectures are now the exception rather than the rule, with multi-cloud networking and environments called out as a top enterprise trend alongside AI networking and AIOps.

AI is amplifying this shift. Training large language models, fine-tuning domain-specific versions and serving low-latency inference all benefit from tapping into different providers’ strengths: GPU density, regional presence, pricing, or data residency guarantees. Vendors now pitch cloud-agnostic fabrics that stitch together AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Oracle Cloud and on-prem data centers into a single logical network, with centralized policy, routing and observability.

For AI assistants and LLMs, this fabric becomes the nervous system. When an agent plans a workflow, it might reach into a CRM SaaS in one cloud, a data warehouse in another, a vector database in a third region and a fine-tuned LLM hosted on a specialized inference platform. Without a coherent multicloud networking layer, each of those hops becomes a separate snowflake connection, driving up latency, egress cost and security risk. With the right fabric, they become orchestrated paths governed by consistent identity, segmentation and QoS.


Six breakthrough AI assistant technologies that depend on multicloud fabrics

The most important AI-assistant innovations coming in 2025–2026 all increase the dependency on multicloud networking rather than reduce it.

Agentic AI systems, sometimes called digital coworkers, move beyond answering questions to taking actions across enterprise systems. Research firms describe them as autonomous systems that pursue goals through sequences of tool calls with minimal human oversight. For networking teams, that means an AI entity that might spin up resources, modify routing policies, rotate access keys or change edge configurations. These actions only remain safe and debuggable if they traverse a well-instrumented, policy-driven multicloud network rather than ad hoc point-to-point tunnels.

Multimodal AI models that can see, listen and speak are now the standard for frontier assistants. GPT-4o and other multimodal flagships can ingest combinations of text, images, audio and video, supporting use cases like video troubleshooting, document understanding or real-time voice coaching. Cloud providers are racing to launch native multimodal models of their own, such as Meta’s Llama 4 and Google’s Gemini 3, both designed to handle rich inputs and agentic control. The more modalities an assistant handles, the more bandwidth and jitter-sensitive traffic it pushes through the network, especially when streams are routed between regions or providers.

On-device and edge AI move parts of the assistant stack closer to the user. Edge AI reports highlight the appeal: lower latency measured in tens of milliseconds rather than hundreds, reduced bandwidth and stronger privacy when sensitive data never leaves the device. But these assistants rarely operate fully offline. They continuously synchronize with cloud-based models, data stores and policy engines. That creates a three-tier fabric of device, edge and cloud where multicloud networking must provide predictable paths and dynamic routing between thousands of small edges and multiple core providers.

Domain-specific LLMs, tuned for sectors like finance, healthcare or legal, are becoming the workhorses of enterprise AI because they encode institutional knowledge and compliance requirements that generic models lack. Organizations may host some of these on private stacks in a primary cloud, others on regulated SaaS in another region, and still others on specialized third-party platforms. An assistant serving a single user request may consult several vertical models chained together, each across a different network boundary. Multicloud networking is what transforms that chain from a brittle maze into a manageable topology.

Advanced reasoning and persistent memory turn assistants into long-term “co-thinkers.” Instead of treating every prompt as a fresh interaction, they remember decisions, preferences and constraints across weeks or months. Infrastructure blogs describe how AI workload orchestration is increasingly treated as an adaptive fabric, connecting compute, storage and networking with container-based control planes. A reasoning-capable assistant that can recall past incidents or configurations becomes dramatically more powerful when it can correlate that history across multiple clouds, VPCs and edge locations – something only feasible with consistent, cross-cloud identifiers and flow visibility.

Finally, AI safety, governance and TRiSM (Trust, Risk and Security Management) are emerging as board-level priorities. Gartner introduced AI TRiSM to emphasize governance, fairness, reliability and data protection for AI deployments. These controls cannot be bolted only onto the application. Policy enforcement, anomaly detection and encryption must extend into the multicloud network fabric itself. Otherwise, an assistant could route sensitive data through unintended regions or expose models to adversarial traffic patterns that evade centralized monitoring.


Architectural patterns for AI-ready multicloud networking

Architecturally, AI-ready multicloud networking is converging around a few patterns. Organizations are deploying overlay fabrics that abstract the complexity of underlay provider networks. These network-as-a-service platforms offer a single console to define segments, route policies and security controls, while automatically instantiating cloud exchange points close to major regions.

Many enterprises pair this with private connectivity from carriers and colocation providers to control the “middle mile” between clouds and data centers. Rather than backhauling traffic over the public internet, they use high-capacity private backbones or fiber partnerships to ensure deterministic performance for AI-heavy flows. Telecommunications providers, for instance, are now launching dedicated fiber networks specifically to support AI applications running on public clouds, emphasizing low latency and resiliency between data centers.

At the application edge, service meshes and API gateways provide fine-grained control over how assistants call downstream services. For multicloud networking teams, that means the control plane is increasingly split between networking and application layers, both of which must share identity, telemetry and policy data. The most advanced organizations are integrating AIOps platforms that ingest signals from network devices, cloud APIs, service meshes and model monitoring tools to produce a unified view of the AI fabric.


Operational challenges: cost, latency and shadow AI

Of course, the picture is not entirely rosy. AI workloads generate enormous east-west traffic as models replicate, checkpoints sync and embeddings move between vector stores and inference clusters. One industry study notes that multi-cloud networking promises flexibility but often hits roadblocks around high connectivity costs, low bandwidth and limited visibility when traffic criss-crosses multiple providers.

Egress fees remain a potent deterrent. An AI assistant that routinely shuttles large multimodal payloads between clouds can quietly inflate monthly bills, especially when teams lack cost observability at the network-flow level. Some vendors now offer services that dynamically optimize routes and intelligently localize workloads to minimize cross-cloud data movement, but these require careful integration with both orchestration and financial governance tools.

Security and compliance risks are also intensifying. Gartner warns that by 2030, around forty percent of enterprises could experience security or compliance incidents tied to “shadow AI,” where employees adopt unapproved AI tools that move sensitive data through unmanaged networks and models. In multicloud environments, that “shadow” often means unsanctioned connections to external APIs or SaaS models outside the official fabric, creating blind spots for both security and networking teams.


What CIOs and network leaders should prioritize in 2025–2026

For technology and networking leaders, the message is clear: multicloud networking strategy can no longer be separated from AI assistant strategy. The two are now inseparable.

In the near term, enterprises should begin by mapping the real paths that AI assistants and agents take through their infrastructure. That means cataloging which models run in which clouds, how data moves between inference, storage and analytics, and where edge devices or branch offices enter the picture. Many teams discover that their actual topology is far more distributed and ad hoc than their diagrams suggest.

Next, leaders need to standardize on a cloud-agnostic networking fabric that supports consistent segmentation, identity and QoS policies regardless of where a workload runs. Instead of managing different security and routing constructs in each provider, they should strive for a unified policy layer that expresses business intent once and translates it into provider-specific configuration underneath.

Over time, AI-native operations will become critical. That includes deploying AIOps tools that can correlate metrics, traces and logs from network devices, clouds and AI models into a single view, letting teams spot issues like cross-cloud latency spikes, model drift or anomalous data flows early. It also means bringing AI TRiSM concepts into the core of network design so that every new assistant or agent is evaluated not just for accuracy but for how it behaves under real network conditions and failure modes.


Closing Thoughts and Looking Forward

As enterprises race into 2026, multicloud networking is quietly becoming one of the most strategic levers for AI success. The most powerful assistants and LLMs—agentic, multimodal, edge-enhanced, domain-specific, deeply reasoning and well-governed—are also the most demanding from a connectivity perspective. They assume a world where data and compute can be stitched together across providers as if they belonged to one coherent substrate.

Organizations that treat multicloud networking as an afterthought will increasingly find their AI roadmaps constrained by egress costs, unpredictable latency and unacceptable risk. Those that invest in a robust, observable and policy-rich multicloud fabric will be able to safely experiment with agentic AI, push intelligence to the edge and chain together specialized models without losing control of performance or compliance.

In the next wave, expect to see AI assistants participate directly in network operations, recommending or even implementing routing and segmentation changes under human supervision. If AI is becoming the brain of the digital enterprise, multicloud networking is rapidly emerging as its nervous system. Getting that nervous system right will determine how far and how fast organizations can safely scale their AI ambitions.
