The EuroHPC JU Signs QC Hosting Agreements with Six Different European HPC Centers with a Total Budget of EUR100 Million ($109M USD) – Quantum Computing Report

The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) is a joint initiative between the EU, European countries and private partners to develop a world class supercomputing ecosystem in Europe. They will be funding the installation of six different quantum computers at six different HPC centers in Czechia, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain. The total costs for these installations will be about 100 million Euro with EuroHPC JU contributing 50% of the total. EuroHPC will be responsible for procuring the machines and has signed hosting agreements with each of the sites define the roles, rights and obligations of each party. The quantum computers will be integrated with other classical HPC systems that are located at these data centers. Here are some information on each of the processors expected to be installed at each site.
LUMI-QThis quantum computer will be installed in 2024 at the IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center in Ostrava, Czechia by LUMI-Q, an international consortium formed by 15 partners from nine European countries. The processor will have at least 12 superconducting based qubits arranged in a star-shaped topology to minimize SWAP operations. EuroQCS-FranceThis processor will be installed at CEA‘s Tr?s Grand Centre de Calcul (TGCC) in Bruy?res-le-Ch?tel, France by the the EuroQCS-France consortium led by France with partners from Ireland, Romania and Germany. The project will include an analogue quantum simulator from French start-up PASQAL along with a photonic based processor.
Euro-Q-ExaThis will be a superconducting based processor hosted at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (LRZ) in Garching, Germany. An initial system is expected to be available in 2024 with larger systems of up to 100 qubits available later on. Euro-QCS-ItalyThis quantum computer will be a neutral atom based processor that will be hosted at the Cineca data center in Bologna, Italy.
Euro-QCS-PolandThis quantum computer will be a trapped ion based processor that will be hosted at the Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center in Poznan, Poland.
Euro-QCS-SpainThis machine will be an analog quantum computer and hosted at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center in Barcelona, Spain.
