Apple‘s custom-designed M2 series processors power the newMacBook Pro, Mac mini models and the latestMacBook Air. According to a report by The Elec, Apple stopped the production of its M2 series chips at the beginning of 2023. The report also mentions that the Cupertino-based tech giant decided to halt production in January after the global demand forMacBookstook a hit amid a severe PC market downturn. Initially, Apple completely suspended production of the M2 series processors. However, the production has now resumed, but they were “only half the level of the previous year,” the report notes.
The report adds, “Taiwan’s TSMC did not send 5 nano-process M2 chip wafer workpieces to the outsourced semiconductor package test (OSAT) in January and February, according to the OSAT industry on the 3rd. It is believed that it was because Apple requested to stop production as demand for MacBooks dwindled.”
Apple’s revenue has taken a hitIn February, Apple mentioned that its revenue has reduced by 5% in the first quarter (YoY). The decline has been steeper than expected as Apple faced supply issues with iPhones. The company also saw a reduction in the revenue of Macs and wearables as well.
However, the new M2-powered iPad models helped to push the revenue of the tablets to go up by 30%. As the company didn’t launch any new models at the end of 2022, the revenue from Macs have seen a notable drop. To compare, Mac revenue from Q1 2022 $10.9 billion while the same for Q1 2023 went down to $7.7 billion.
What Tim Cook said about the PC revenue dropApple CEO Tim Cook claimed that the company faced a “challenging” situation in the PC market and also mentoioned that “the industry is contracting,” during the Q1 2023 earnings call.

Apple M2 chip: More detailsThe company introduced the M2 chip in June 2022 with the 13-inch MacBook Pro and a new MacBook Air model. Later on, Apple added M2 Pro and M2 Max variants to its 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models in January 2023. The company also added M2 and M2 Pro options to its Mac mini models as well.
Apple’s M2 chip succeeded the M1 custom processor which was unveiled in 2020. In April 2021, the company launched the 24-inch iMac which came powered by the M1 processor. Apple introduced the Max and Ultra versions of the same chip with Mac Studio almost after a year.
